Engagement at SXSW 2014 – #sxswLAM

Outreach at sxsw2014

EveryLibrary is heading to Austin for South by Southwest Interactive from Wednesday 3/5 – Weds 3/12 for several good days of talking with start-ups and venture capitalists about libraries, and with policy folks about libraries and national tech policy.  We have an important question to ask at this significant tech conference: “How do libraries fit into your work?”  We are looking forward to dialog and discussion outside of normal library channels.  We are also helping to support the librarian community as they speak, present, volunteer, and are ambassadors for our institutions and profession.

We will tweet @everylibrary and tag #sxswLAM throughout.  Join us:

Morning Meetings
You can find us each morning at the ER&L’s IdeaDrop House hosting “Morning Meetings” for the libraries, archives and museums crew.   Come by Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 9:30a – 10:30am for mimosas, light breakfast, and amazing connection around our community.  On Friday, we’re hosting a Thank You breakfast for SXSW’s ISAs, the group of volunteers who are helping to bring together all the panels at Interactive. Many are librarians. They are good at that kind of logistics.

Meetups and Parties
As previously noted, we make it happen and then party hard.  We are sponsoring, co-sponsoring, or hanging out at several socials for the #sxswLAM set throughout the weekend:

Friday 3/7 from 3:30p – 4:30p  Official SXSW libraries Meet-up (badge required)

Friday 3/7 from 5p – 6p   #sxswLAM Crew Meet-up (cash bar, tix link)

Monday 3/10 from 5:30p – 7p Wrap-up Party with Innovative Interfaces (cash bar, tix link)  Free drink RSVP here.

The IdeaDrop Schedule has these meet-ups, parties and more.

Programs and Panels

John Chrastka is a panelist on “Reducing Isolation in LGBT Communities” on Monday, 3/11 at 12:30p in room 10AB in the Convention Center (sxsw Badge required).  John will be joining panelists Jama Shelton and Robert Espinoza for an LGBT Technology Partnership session moderated by Dr. Imani Woody.  From homeless LGBT youth to LGBT seniors who have been rejected by their families, this panel will explore the range of issues the youngest and oldest members of the LGBT communities face and how technology, centers and libraries may serve as the best partners to reduce isolation and homelessness.

In the Exhibits

Through the support of Innovative Interfaces, a leading provider of technology solutions and services to libraries, EveryLibrary will be joining several other national library organizations and associations at a joint Booth (#1036) in the SXSW Trade Show. From Sunday 3/9 – Wednesday 3/12 (from 11a till 6p), the Booth will bring together the American Library Association, the Association of Rural and Small Libraries, the Digital Library Federation, Electronic Resources & Libraries, the Freedom to Read Foundation, EveryLibrary, Urban Libraries Council, Urban Librarians Unite, and sxswLAM to represent libraries and librarians in this marketplace of ideas.  (A badge or day pass is required.)

Around the Conference

EveryLibrary’s executive director John Chrastka (@MrChrastka) is joined by board member Mel Gooch (@mel_gooch), EveryLibrary California board member Mary Abler (@maryabler), our senior advisory Kate Tkacik (@lifegdlibrarian), and Jeannie Allen, marketing director at Kitsap Regional Library.  We have a full calendar of programs, panels, socials, networking events, parties, and booth time that supports both their day-to-day work as librarians and our mission as a national political action committee for libraries.  We’re on the IdeaDrop schedule and all over the sxswLAM pages.  We look forward to connecting.
